Fort Canning Centre still has insects on the third floor. Hidden World: Creepy Crawlies of Singapore opened on 5 September 2026 with NParks' Heritage Festival. The festival week is over. The gallery is not. Official hours now run 10am to 6pm daily until 31 March 2027. Admission is free. The park around the building stays open 24 hours. The gallery does not.
The address is Gallery@L3, Fort Canning Centre, 5 Cox Terrace. NParks lists the show as wheelchair accessible, with the catch that wheelchair access onto the hill is only from the drop-off at the Cox Terrace roundabout. Fort Canning MRT on the Downtown Line is the station that actually dumps you at the foot of the slope. Clarke Quay and Dhoby Ghaut also work if you want the walk up through the spice plots.
Little Day Out walked six rooms. Nature's Hunters is first: jaws, venom, speed. Hide and Seek Champions is the camouflage wall, the room most families stop in. Show Off to Defend is the colour-warning section. Biologists call that aposematism. Web of Life covers pollinators and the species that break down leaf litter. Treasures of Singapore and Treasure of Fort Canning are the local lists, including a plant bug described as new to science in 2026.
That insect is Ernestinus singaporensis. The Straits Times and NParks both name it. Specimens came from Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park. Staff have found it on the underside of Alocasia leaves along Five Kings Walk and near Artisan's Garden. It is about 3 millimetres long. You will not see it unless someone points. Zaobao's preview put the exhibition at more than 120 insect and arachnid species, with ten live tanks. The official page is blunt about the photographs. They are large and close. If millipedes or spiders bother you, skip the walls or move through fast.
Live specimens sit in glass tanks on the same floor. Bring a magnifying glass if you have one. NParks supplies the close look on the walls. One of the official press images is a katydid, Phyllomimus inversus, sitting on a leaf that it almost is. Another is the Long-horned Orb Weaver, Macracantha arcuata, with spines longer than its body. Those photographs are credited to field shooters, not stock libraries. They match what hangs in the gallery.
Next door, Fort Canning Centre: A Century of Transformation runs the same hours until the same 31 March 2027 close. The barracks went up in 1926 as British army housing. In the 1970s the block was billed as the world's largest commercial squash centre. Later it held arts groups. The photographs include colonial construction shots from the National Archives. You can do both exhibitions in one visit without buying a ticket.
NParks listed a free guided tour of the two galleries on Saturday 17 October 2026, 10am to 11.30am, led by Fort Canning Park volunteers. Children 12 and under need an adult. Register on the NParks event page. If that slot is full, the rooms stay open without a guide until March.
The hill is why you should not treat this as a mall atrium stop. NParks measures Fort Canning Park at 22 hectares. Fort Gate is the remaining colonial arch. The Spice Garden holds more than 180 herbs. Heritage Gallery hours are 10am to 6pm. Battle Box is a separate ticketed bunker. Do not mix the bunker ticket with this free show. Group activities, filming, and proposals need the park-use form. Email nparks_fcp@nparks.gov.sg for exhibition queries.
Eat after you leave the hill. Clarke Quay and Boat Quay sit downhill toward the river. This is a park visit with a free gallery on level 3, not a food hall. Carparks A, B and C are on the hill and fill on weekend mornings. The exhibition is the leftover that outlasted Heritage Festival week. Use it before 31 March 2027.
