The Ngee Ann Teochew Cultural and Food Festival occupies Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza from 2 to 4 October 2026. Sunday 4 October is the last day. Two food sessions remain: 10am to 2pm, then 5pm to 9pm. You cannot buy the food with cash. The only way onto a plate is a complimentary $20 coupon, one per person, valid only on the day you collect it.
The Ngee Ann Kongsi sponsors the festival. Ngee Ann Cultural Centre presents it. Teochew Federation Singapore co-organises. Ngee Ann City lends the plaza. This is the centre's fourth Teochew Cultural and Food Festival, and the wider Teochew Cultural Festival has run here since 2013. The organiser expected more than 12,000 people this year. Online reservations for 1,000 coupons opened at 9am on 1 September and filled within an hour. Walk-up coupons are the remaining route.
How the $20 coupons actually work
On Sunday, the entrance counter at Civic Plaza hands out 100 coupons at 10am, 11am and 12pm, then again at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm. That is 600 coupons for the day if every slot still has stock. Bring NRIC or another ID. Staff record your name and the last three characters of the ID number so you cannot collect twice. Little Day Out, quoting the organiser, is blunt: there is no onsite sale. If you miss the coupon, you do not eat. You can still watch the opera from a separate viewing area with a live video feed.
Friday's public food session started at 12pm because an invitation-only opening filled the plaza from 10am to noon. Saturday and Sunday run the full morning window. Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation seniors, plus some civic-organisation families, received complimentary tickets as part of the Kongsi's community allocation.
What the coupons buy
More than 20 Teochew dishes are on the official list. The crowd-puller this year is bo bi kueh, the chive-stuffed rice cake with no rice in the skin, the snack that showed up in the film Dear You. First-time festival dishes include Kityang stir-fried kway teow with bamboo shoots, Nam Ao seaweed fried rice, and luo tang qian, glutinous rice mochi with peanut and sesame. Little Big Red Dot also flagged Teochew braised duck rice with tau kwa among the signature plates. Gongfu tea demonstrations run through the sessions. Chaozhou's brewing ritual is the slow part of the afternoon if the kueh queue is long.
The food is the reason most people come. The opera is why the plaza is not just another Orchard pop-up. Five local troupes share the stage, some of them more than a century old in Singapore: Er Woo Amateur Musical and Dramatic Association, Thau Yong Amateur Musical Association, Nam Hwa Opera, The Teochew Drama Association, and Chui Huay Lim Teochew Opera Group. It is the first year all five put up a joint programme.
Shows run 11am to 1pm and 6pm to 8pm daily. Little Big Red Dot, working from the organiser's rundown, had Chui Huay Lim taking Friday evening after the joint midday set, Er Woo on Saturday morning, and Nam Hwa on Saturday evening. Confirm the Sunday slots on the official schedule graphic at the plaza if you are picking a troupe. The Civic Plaza sits between Orchard and Somerset. Park at Ngee Ann City B3 or Level 6 if you drive. Buses 36, 77, 124, 143, 167, 174, 190, 518 and 972 stop at Bef Cairnhill Rd. The opposite stop, Opp Ngee Ann City, takes 14e, 124, 143, 162, 162M, 167, 190, 972 and 972M.
If you already hold a coupon, go early in the slot. If you do not, the 5pm, 6pm and 7pm queues on 4 October are the last chance of the year. After 9pm the stalls pack up, and Orchard goes back to mall hours.
