Spicy Hubby opens at The Centrepoint with $9.90 ayam berempah

Spicy Wife's first mall plate is at The Centrepoint, and the 1-for-1 on all three mains runs Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October 2026. The sign says Spicy Hubby. Hawker Yeak Hong Yi, 37, still fries at Amoy Street Food Centre. His partner Brandon Lim, 33, runs the Orchard room, the same unit that used to be Auntie Ashley.

Nasi rendang ayam at Spicy Hubby, The Centrepoint Food Street, Orchard Road

Address is 176 Orchard Road, #01-55/56, The Centrepoint Food Street, Singapore 238843. Daily 10:00 to 21:00. Somerset MRT. Eatbook printed 76 Orchard Road. That is a dropped digit. The Centrepoint's postal code 238843 sits on 176. Self-service, about 60 seats, order at a kiosk, wait for a number. Not halal-certified. No pork, no lard.

The $9.90 plate versus Amoy Street

The signature is Nasi Goreng Ayam Berempah at $9.90. At Amoy it is $7.50. Hong Yi's rempah is still his. Eight ingredients. 8days got garlic, onion, ginger, lemongrass, cumin, and coriander on the record. He grinds the paste and sends it over. The team marinates frozen chicken legs overnight and fries them in the mall kitchen. Brandon had to pass a test on that fry, crisp skin, meat still juicy, before Hong Yi signed on.

The Orchard bird is a bit smaller than the Amoy one, still 350g and up. Coconut rice, a runny egg, fried ikan bilis, cucumber. The house sambal is about half as hot as the hawker stall, made in Brandon's factory in Malaysia. Half is not mild. Hong Yi moves about 200 plates in a four-hour weekday lunch at Amoy, one man, one dish. This room exists because that queue does not fit into an evening.

Spicy Hubby dining room under the Balai Raya Papan sign at The Centrepoint, with ayam berempah plates

The fit-out is the leftover kopitiam: red and green tables, a collapsible-gate look, a sign that reads Balai Raya Papan. HungryGoWhere's Hakim Rahman shot the room in October 2026. Temporary tattoos and Ludo on the counter are for sale. 8days noted 1980s Cantopop and that they kept Auntie Ashley's bones to keep the rent honest.

Rendang came back. Gepuk is new.

Nasi Rendang Ayam is $12.90. Hong Yi used to cook chicken rendang at the hawker stall and dropped it because he could not run two dishes alone. Bone-in thigh, chopped, coconut gravy, keropok, egg, cucumber. HungryGoWhere called it spoonable rather than dry Malay rendang, coconut shavings on top. If you knew it at Amoy, this is the return, not a mall invention.

Nasi Ayam Gepuk is $12.90 and is the true new plate. Brandon pointed at Malaysian-style smashed fried chicken. 8days's tasting notes say the thigh here is not smashed. It is seasoned, fried, then kecap manis, sambal, peanut sauce, fried cabbage. Mix the two sauces. The chicken is plain without them.

Sides if you are sharing: long bean sambal $2.90, fried tempeh $4.90, XL otak $4.90, okra curry $2.90, curry fish ball $6.90, fried prawn cracker $1.90, fried shrimp roll $6.90, extra egg $1.50. Sparkling calamansi is $4.90. They steep the fruit on the counter.

This weekend, then normal prices

1-for-1 covers all three mains from 16 to 18 October, dine-in and takeaway. After Sunday you pay the menu. Brandon is already talking about more outlets and complained that a tiny Holland Village unit under an escalator wanted more than $8,000 a month. Hong Yi stays at Amoy. If you want the hotter sambal and the heavier bird, that stall is still the lunch queue. If you want an evening plate on Orchard without standing in Telok Ayer, this is the room that exists now.
